The British economy, and indeed the world economy, is giving off decidedly mixed signals at the moment. While there is a general feeling of mild panic and stocks waver in the face of Chinese weakness, there are also flashes of good news.

For example, BT announced today it would be creating 1,000 new jobs in the UK. The new positions come as the telecommunications Goliath shifts its much maligned customer services operation back to this country.

The company plans to ensure 80 per cent of customer calls are answered from within the UK by the end of the year, and to that end will be beefing up its UK workforce between now and next year.

BT has recently bought the mobile phone company EE and is currently concluding the acquisition of the company.
