In this episode, Bill Banham talks with Giles O’Halloran, an experienced HR professional who works as a freelance consultant, coach, speaker, and writer. They speak about why business leaders don’t like HR and how can HR leaders get themselves at the top table and get more respect from senior leadership.
Guest: Giles O’Halloran
Giles started his HR career working for IBM and his last role with IBM was as an HR Business Partner for the UK’s largest strategic business unit. He has since worked in other senior HR roles across Europe, advised at the board level, and worked internationally as a consultant.
Questions For Giles Include:
- You are passionate about Business Partnering – what are your thoughts on this subject matter?
- A couple of years back you wrote an article called ‘Why don’t Business Leaders love, appreciate or like HR …?‘ In it, you write: “HR professionals and even senior HR leaders often feel unloved, unappreciated and misunderstood by their colleagues and leadership. They are not part of the strategic conversations. They don’t feel listened to or that their advice is deemed credible. And they are only involved after the real decisions have been made. HR may have a seat at the table, but it is often a lonely existence because they are branded the police, blockers or quasi-lawyers. This doesn’t place HR as a strategic player or as even a partner.” How can HR leaders get themselves at the top table and get more respect from senior leadership?
- You have worked globally as a trainer and consultant, what is the most common theme that HR is concerned about? How are HR leaders planning for a recession?
